Where to find Armenian bedtime stories
Parents raising children in Armenian, whether in Yerevan or abroad, often struggle to find good bedtime stories in the language. There are two good places to start:
- Classic Armenian tales you can read for free. Nanik's Armenian stories library has 22 tales by Hovhannes Tumanyan, 20 by Ghazaros Aghayan, and 35 by Hans Christian Andersen in Armenian translation.
- A new story made for your child, in Armenian. With the Nanik app you describe a hero or photograph a favorite toy, and Nanik writes, illustrates and narrates a story in Armenian, in your own voice if you like.

Hovhannes Tumanyan (Հովհաննես Թումանյան)
Tumanyan is Armenia's best-loved storyteller. His folk-inspired tales are a natural choice for reading aloud. A few to start with:
- Ծիտը (The Sparrow)
- Խոսող ձուկը (The Talking Fish)
- Ուլիկը (The Kid)
- Չախչախ թագավորը (King Chakhchakh)
Ghazaros Aghayan (Ղազարոս Աղայան)
Aghayan wrote longer, more adventurous folk tales with forest settings, brave heroes and clever twists. They suit slightly older children, or can be read over two or three nights.
- Անտառի մանուկը (The Child of the Forest)
- Զանգի-Զրանգի (Zangi-Zrangi)
Hans Christian Andersen in Armenian
If your child already knows Andersen from another language, you can read familiar stories in Armenian. They are a gentle way to build vocabulary.
- Անճոռնի ճուտիկը (The Ugly Duckling)
- Թագավորի նոր զգեստը (The Emperor's New Clothes)
Tips for reading Armenian stories at bedtime
- Start short. Pick a tale that is short enough for your child to follow, and read the same one for several nights. Repetition is how children pick up words.
- Speak the way your family speaks. Eastern and Western Armenian differ in spelling and vocabulary. Read in the form your child hears at home, and explain unfamiliar words in a sentence.
- Mix in a second language if needed. In diaspora homes it is fine to explain a word in English or Russian. The goal is warmth, not perfection.
- Let them hear your voice. On nights you are away, a recording of you reading keeps the routine and the language going.
- Talk about the story. Ask "What do you think the sparrow will do?" in Armenian. Short questions invite short answers, and that is real practice.
A personalized story in Armenian, in your own voice
Classic tales are wonderful, but they are not about your child. Nanik is an iOS app that creates a new, personalized bedtime story around a hero you describe or a photo of a favorite toy. Armenian is one of the main languages of the app, alongside English and Russian, and stories and narration are available in more than 100 languages.
You can also use Nanik for the moments classics do not cover: a first day of school, a fear of the dark, a new baby. See stories for bedtime fears, stories for new experiences and stories about big feelings.
To have the story read in your voice, record a short sample once. See bedtime stories in your own voice. Also see Russian bedtime stories. Voice availability can differ by language, so try it with a first story in the app.
