Russian bedtime stories for kids
Сказки на ночь на русском языке
Classic tales to read tonight, and personalized stories in Russian, told in your own voice.
Where to find Russian bedtime stories
Russian-speaking parents, whether in Russia, Armenia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan or abroad, have two good places to start:
- Classic Russian tales. Folk tales and poems that generations of children grew up with, widely available in books and audio.
- A new personalized story in Russian. With the Nanik app you describe a hero or photograph a favorite toy, and Nanik writes, illustrates and narrates a story in Russian, with your child's name in it. Russian is one of the app's main languages, alongside English and Armenian.
Classic Russian tales for bedtime
These are well-known Russian stories, easy to find in print or audio. They are listed here as suggestions, not hosted on Nanik.
Russian folk tales (русские народные сказки)
- «Колобок» (The Little Round Bun): a short tale about a bun that runs away, good for ages 2 to 5.
- «Репка» (The Giant Turnip): a repeating, cumulative story that toddlers love to join in.
- «Теремок» (The Little House): animals take turns moving in, with an easy rhythm.
- «Курочка Ряба» (The Speckled Hen): very short, ideal for the youngest children.
- «Маша и медведь» (Masha and the Bear): a longer adventure for ages 4 and up.
Poems and longer tales
- Alexander Pushkin's verse tales, such as «Сказка о царе Салтане», suit older children or can be read over several nights.
- Korney Chukovsky's rhyming stories, such as «Мойдодыр» and «Тараканище», are fun, but are better for daytime than bedtime because the rhythm is lively.
- Agniya Barto's and Samuil Marshak's short poems make easy wind-down reading.
Check a book's edition and age range before you buy. Some modern editions simplify or change the original text.
Tips for keeping Russian alive at bedtime
- Make it the bedtime language. Even if your child speaks another language during the day, a Russian-only bedtime gives steady exposure.
- Read the same tale many nights. Cumulative tales like «Репка» teach vocabulary through repetition.
- Let them finish the sentences. Pause and let your child say the next word.
- Use your own voice. Hearing a parent's Russian is the strongest signal that the language matters in your family. On nights you are away, a recording keeps it going.
- Mix languages if you need to. In multilingual homes it is fine to explain a word in another language.
A personalized story in Russian, in your own voice
Classic tales are lovely, but they do not mention your child, their fear of the dark or their first day of school. Nanik creates a new bedtime story around a hero you describe or a photo of a favorite toy, illustrates it, and narrates it. Stories and narration are available in more than 100 languages, and Russian is one of the three languages featured first in the app.
If you would like your child to hear the story in your own voice, record a short sample once, and choose the language you will speak when you save your voice. Voice availability can differ by language, so try it with a first story. See bedtime stories in your own voice and how voice recordings are handled.
In our searches for Russian-language story apps we found many that personalize a story with a child's name, but none that advertised narration in the parent's own voice. That is the gap Nanik is built for. See also how Nanik compares with other apps.
